Let it Bee.....

"All I can say is that my life is pretty plain....I like watchin' the puddles gather rain.."
No Rain by Blind Melon

I've got to tell ya, I really am thankful for this simple farmer-ish life.....

Last night, we completely lucked out and were given a couple thousand bees!!

Thank you Kerry Heafner!!! He is our local Go-To man at the LSU extension office on Cypress Street who we have talked about before. He offered awhile back to give us some bees once our melons started flowering.

I'd been giving him updates all week.

First the cantaloupe was blooming and now the watermelon.

And Yes- Phoebe really does get dressed up like that just to go outside!!!!  (She doesn't get that from me!!)

So, he lined it up for Sunday evening to bring them.

FASCINATING!!!!

He arrived around 9pm (said he needed to bring them in the evening when the bees were asleep!!) and had on his this white Bee suit with a mask. The kids jumped out of bed to come check it all out!!!

Phoebe said that Mr Kerry looked like an astronaut!!  He really did!!

Here was his smoker. This is used to help keep bees calm.

And here was the large white box with straps around it in the back of his truck that held the bees.

I really don't know what I was expecting, but that wasn't it. I think I was picturing something crazy like a big hive on the end of a stick!!! hahaha

He had told us earlier in the week to get some cinderblocks ready and to place them in a spot that the kids wouldn't get near.

Poor Kerry had to carry the big box the whole way out there in the full jumpsuit and mask covering his face.

It was DARK!!!! Can you see him???

Once he got it in position, he opened it up and we could see some of the bees.

We will put out some water for them today near the melons and Kerry said he would come check on them in a week.

I hope they see all the flowers blooming and think this is paradise aka Candy Land for Bees!!!

Here is a pic of it in the day light.

And we even spotted our first cantaloupe this week too!!! So cool!!!

Thank you Thank you Kerry!!! Our little neighborhood micro farm appreciates you so much.

Love
Lissy

P.S. I keep humming the 1992 hit "No Rain" by Blind Melon and picturing the little bee girl finally being able to join folks that were just like her in the park. To me, this song is about depression, BUT,  it is also about finding beauty in the little things in life, staying true to yourself and the hope of finding your "tribe" that will love you for who you are.

And here is a pic of our little Bee girl at the Zoo this past weekend in front of an area that the Master Gardeners had been working on. Have you guys been out to the Zoo lately?? It looks GREAT!!!!
