The Great Blue Egg Hunt
The Great Blue Egg Hunt
After the dust started to
settle from the Great Chicken Massacre, the P's informed us that they would really like a chicken that laid blue eggs. They had seen all the beautiful and different colored eggs at the Clark's home and had egg envy. Ha!
So, like any good parent, we made it our mission to find the blue egg. We started out by researching what chickens actually laid these blue beauties~ looked like the top 3 blue layers were Ameraucanas, Easter Eggers and Araucanas. We knew we didn't want to deal with any babies right now and didn't want to take a chance on accidentally ending up with any roosters. So, I posted on one of the Local chicken pages about wanting some laying Americauna hens. Who knew there were so many local chicken groups on social media?!
A girl responded pretty quickly, but she was located in Serepta, La.....
Where in the world is that?! Well, it is a small town kind of over near Minden, LA.
After figuring out that is was an hour and a half drive for us, Brent lined it up. So, this very dedicated daddy gathered up some cat carriers and drove to this small town in the middle of the work week in hopes of finding magic hens that lays the prized blue egg.
( I took these images off good ole trusty Wikipedia)
Let me tell ya- these poor girls
Are. Not. Cute. At. All.
They all look like they have reverse Mohawks (is this such a thing? ). Their owner said the roosters had been plucking their feathers out pretty badly on their back...... I was a little horrified when I saw them.
I tried to put some of that purple medicine on their backs, but it was a STRUGGLE!!!! They were pissed. All I managed to do was turn them a pale shade of Lavendar in splotches all over their bodies.
Good Lord- now they Really looked ROUGH!!!!

From a distance, they didn't look that bad. But close up......

But, I've got to think that they will have a happier life here~ no roosters to bother them and a crazy chicken lady who will serve them fresh cut up strawberries and grapes regularly with a side of fresh herbs.
Our 4 other classy girls were a little taken back by the new rough riders in town. Chapel the Chicken had lots to say!! Here she is eating some Meal Worms from P's hand.
Even after a couple of days,It looked like the 1983 movie~ The Outsiders ~ going on with the preppy brown girls on one side "The Socials" and the trashy whitish/purple-ish girls on the other "the Greasers".
And our two young Silkies were just waddling around without a clue.
Ha! I swear the Blonde looks like Jane Fonda with leg warmers on her feet.

But what do you know, within a day, we got blue eggs!!!! And even a green one out of those rough looking hens!!!
Home run!! Score!!
Pearson and Phoebe were so excited~ Way to go Daddy!!!
It was like finding Willy Wonka's golden ticket.
I guess the moral of the story is to "Never Judge a Chicken by its Cover"
