Enoch's and Seeds

Did I mention that when we decided to do the pumpkin patch, we were actually at Enoch's on a rare date night??

While listening to our buddy Dave Reeves play over a few adult beverages, I was doing a little sketching of the band and the idea came up about starting a pumpkin patch.
And me being the perfectly impatient person I am, decided at 11pm at Enochs that it was the perfect time to order seeds online for the patch that had just been decided on!!!

What does any Wannabe Farmer do??

Yep- you guessed it! You google "Biggest Pumpkins to Grow" and I zoomed in on some called "Connecticut Field Pumpkin Seeds".

Hmmmm- Connecticut is a good state-right? And apparently this kind of pumpkin was the heirloom to the New England settlers and Indians. Perfect! Good enough for the Indians, good enough for me. Surely we couldn't screw up a seed that has been producing for 100's of years-right?? So I found some seeds at Urban Farmer  (www.ufseeds.com) and ordered a bunch and then sat back and listened to Dave play another set. Check out the time at the top of the pic...I wasn't kidding!! haaha
Later that week (during the day and not under the influence of a few beers), it was suggested to us that maybe we should be trying to grow pumpkin seeds that are known for growing in the South!!!

Oh Yeah-Duh!!!

So then we learned that "Big Max" was a good pumpkin seed for our zone. And I proceeded to order 1/4 lb of those from www.vegetableseedwarehouse.com
Brent and I then decided we would just plant BOTH types of seeds and see how they both did. We figure-what do we have to lose? This is an experiment-right?
So while we were waiting for all these seeds to come in the mail- we were getting the patch ready. If you remember from my last blog post, we didn't own a tractor nor even a tiller!!! Thankfully, our good friend Jonathan Hill gave up a few evenings of his life to come over and help us. Not only is he a great neighbor, but he is an awesome builder too!! (www.jhillconstruction.com)

He brought his tractor and tilled up all the dirt for us. We then put out all the fertilizer stuff that LSU said we needed. (I posted this pic previously on Instagram, but had to repost...I really do think those tall green rubber boots are sexy on a man....)
And back to putting out fertilizer.....Even the kids helped put it out!

Then, Brent borrowed a middle buster from his hunting buddy Mark Taylor. They hooked it up to Jonathan's tractor and then Jonathan proceeded to make the rows for us.

BIG THANK YOU to friends like The Hills and Mark~ If it weren't for them, we would still be trying to figure out a rented tiller....

To be continued.

P.S I also ordered Gourd Seeds,  Jack Be Littles, Sun Flower Seeds and White Pumpkin Seeds. I figure we might as well try it all out!!  #GoBigOrGoHome
