We Need a Translator.....
The hives went away and my angry feelings towards the pumpkin patch faded. Brent continued to burn down the wood pile and my new thoughts were on DIRT.
How would we know if the spot we picked to grow the pumpkins had the right kind of soil? I went by the LSU Extension Office on Cypress Street and got a little kit for us to put our soil in to mail off.
It was very easy. You just put your dirt in these little baggies along with some money and send it down to the LSU Ag Center in Baton Rouge. The kit was already self addressed and everything.
While we waited on results to come back in (it took about 2 weeks), Brent got to work on killing weeds all over the patch.
"3.84 lb/100 foot row of Ammonium Sulfate...Triple Super phosphate...Muriate of Potash..."
So I called the nice man at the Extension Office and took notes on everything he said. To summarize it, I basically needed to go back to West Feed Mill and show them my info sheet and buy what was on my list. I head over there feeling not very confident in myself.
BUT, Kathy up there was very patient and helped me to understand how to figure pounds per 100 foot row
And we realized it was cheaper to buy 50Lb bags rather than a bunch of smaller bags of fertilizer considering the size of our patch. She told me we needed to First, Till the dirt. And then Second, put all this stuff out. $114 dollars later. I'm about to walk out the door and I hear her call out..
Uggggg. Lord. Even she was having her doubts on Compton Farms ability to grow pumpkins. And on second thought,

There is a reason I am an art person and not a math/science person......"3.84 lb/100 foot row of Ammonium Sulfate...Triple Super phosphate...Muriate of Potash..."

"You know it would be a lot easier and a lot cheaper to just go buy your pumpkins from the nice Methodist church down on the interstate.."
